The Rostov Art School named after MB Grekov is one of the oldest and most distinguished schools in Russia. Its history dates back to 1895-1896 when, on the initiative of the Artistic Society and the dedication of the exceptional teacher and artist A.S. Chinenov, drawing classes were established. Over time, the school evolved into a highly professional art school, producing many outstanding artists such as S.G. Korolkov, the first and foremost illustrator of The Quiet Flows the Don by M.A. Sholokhov; E.V. Vuchetich, a People's Artist known for monumental sculptural compositions in Berlin, Volgograd, and New York; V.A. Pushkarev, an artist and art historian who headed the State Russian Museum for over 20 years and was instrumental in preserving and returning to Russia the works of Russian artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; and folk artists A.I. Laktionova, A.D. Romanycheva, N.A. Ponomarev, among others.

Like 100 years ago, the Rostov Art School continues to preserve the traditions of the Russian realistic school. Before the revolution of 1917, the Russian Academy of Arts supervised the educational process and established a solid foundation for academic education, which is still an essential aspect of the curriculum today. This foundation has become an immutable law of education for all generations of teachers, many of whom were students of the school and institutes of the Russian Academy of Arts.

“They teach you well on the Don,” said the famous artist, art critic, and restorer I.I. Grabar, looking at the work of the school's students. The tradition of our graduates entering the leading art universities of the country and their demand in various fields of culture and art confirms this statement.

The RHU named after M.B. Grekov places great emphasis on the participation of its students in various creative schools and All-Russian plein airs. These events take place in Pereyaslavl-Zalessky, Karelia, St. Petersburg, and the Ulyanovsk region, ensuring the professional development of young artists and broadening their horizons. They also introduce students to the diversity of nature in our Motherland and instill a sense of patriotism and love for their native land. At these plein airs, the work of the Dontsov-Molodtsov, as they were called, received high marks.

The Rostov Art College is the coordinating center of the southern methodological zone among secondary vocational schools that train in the fine arts. The Plein Air "Quiet Flows the Don" held in the village of Veshenskaya, organized by the RHU named after M.B. Grekov, allowed representatives from the leading schools of the Southern Federal District and other cities of Russia, such as Krasnodar, Stavropol, Bryansk, and Penza, to gather. Students had the opportunity to explore the unique nature of the Don and visit places associated with the life and work of the Don genius M.A. Sholokhov. All of this will undoubtedly contribute to the growth of the young talents' skills, helping them gain self-confidence and actively engage in the artistic life of their region.

G.S. Skoptsova, an honored worker of culture of the Russian Federation, art critic, and director of the RHU named after M.B. Grekov, wrote this article.

The State Museum-Reserve M.A. Sholokhova is located in the village of Veshenskaya, in the Rostov region. In 2005, UNESCO declared it the Year of Mikhail Sholokhov, and as part of the celebrations, the Rostov Art School named after M.B. Grekov organized the All-Russian plein air "Quiet Don" under the auspices of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography. The museum-reserve, established in 1984, is dedicated to the great writer and his works, particularly his portrayal of rural life.

The museum-reserve is situated in the north of the Rostov region, in the Sholokhov and Bokovsky districts, and has six objects of inspection. Museum expositions showcase the life and work of the writer, including his childhood, youth, mature years, and social activities. The museum also displays items related to the Upper Don Cossacks of the early 20th century, providing visitors with a glimpse into rural life of that time.

The museum's collection is unique due to the memoriality of the preserved Sholokhov items. The collection includes personal items, numerous works of the writer in different languages, letters, manuscripts, and more. The museum's protected natural landscape zone spans 38,236 hectares and includes restored architectural complexes and natural monuments, including the 400-year-old Veshensky Oak. The complex consists of 26 buildings, including 16 historical and cultural monuments, such as the M.A. Sholokhov, numerous preserved household buildings typical of the Cossacks, reed roofs, and wicker fences.

Overall, the State Museum-Reserve M.A. Sholokhova is a must-visit destination for those interested in the life and works of the great writer, as well as for those interested in the history and culture of the Upper Don Cossacks and rural life in the early 20th century.
