I watched the next episode of the podcast “Draftsmen” in English. Co-host Marshall, a top-notch teacher and eternal student, spoke about the concept of role models/"secret identities" that a teacher can associate with.

Stereotypic behavior cannot be avoided, but we still have the freedom of choice.

We can follow models that are not very pleasant, or we can develop or find a model that allows us to qualitatively improve the work process and emotionally stimulate all its participants.

Role examples:

  • A man in a helicopter flying on top of the swamp in which the students are bogged down, and shouting to them through a megaphone: "Don't go there, there are crocodiles!"

  • Tour guide. The task is to conduct a mountain excursion along difficult and interesting trails, so that no one gets hurt.

  • Gardener. Your task is to sow seeds, even if the earth seems lifeless and hopeless, some seeds will sprout, some will grow into trees and bear fruit.

  • A sailor who teaches not only the use of modern instruments for navigation, but also how to read the stars. (combination of modern and traditional methods)

  • Mother feeding her chicks. (doing all the hard work for them)

  • Treasure chest holder. The older and more experienced the teacher, the more relevant this model is.

  • Clown. Marshal cites the example of his co-host Stanislav Prokopenko, who runs a YouTube project, an important part of whose job is to ensure that educational material is presented in a casual, mischievous manner. Stanislav considers it important that students get joy from the lessons.

These are just a few examples from the video, in my Russian translation. There are many more models, and the wording can be anything. The essence of the conscious modeling of the workflow.

Personally, I love the "miracle witness" model. I am the one who returned from a trip, and I am eager to share my observations, impressions and maps with interesting trails.

What is your secret identity?
